Reiki Energy Healing
Reiki (pronounced Ray-key) is a Japanese name consisting of 2 words Rei and Ki meaning spiritually guided life energy (commonly known as Universal Life Energy), an energy which animates us all and is found all around us. In Reiki, the universal life energy is allowed to flow into ourselves, and then WE, act as a vehicle – through which this energy can be passed on to another individual via our hands. It becomes natural to touch someone and allow this healing energy to flow when someone is in pain, and to assist in relieving this pain. I liken it to the healing feelings I may have when comforting a child or loved one. A Reiki treatment restores balance and harmony to the whole person, bringing about a sense of wellness. Reiki can help to harmonize body, mind and spirit for yourself or anyone you want to help. Its use is not dependent on one’s intellectual capacity or spiritual development and therefore is available to everyone. It has been successfully taught to thousands of people of all ages and backgrounds.

Reiki Energy Healing: Why It Works
Reiki is an extremely gentle technique suitable for adults, elderly, children and babies. There is no pressure on the body making it ideal for treating all ages and conditions. In Reiki, practitioners gather energy from the universal life force and then, through their hands, pass it to the client to enhance the body’s own healing processes and to restore harmony to body mind and spirit. Practitioners may place their hands slightly above the body or place them lightly on different parts of the body in a prescribed pattern and let the energies flow to where there are imbalances. The life force flows within the physical body through pathways called chakras, meridians or nadis, nourishing and supporting the body with positive energy all the way to the cells.
Why Reiki works is an often debated topic but there are many great scientists offering their viewpoint. Barbara Ann Brennan, former NASA physicist and founder of an internationally known energy and healing school, has written in her book Hands of Light, that the healer induces the patient to heal himself through natural processes, even though they are beyond what is considered to be natural for those who are not familiar with healing. In the meditative or expanded state of consciousness, the practitioner has access to information and the ability to correct and repair appropriate layers of the energy field. She feels that our bodies and our energy systems naturally move toward health and that sometime only a little assistance is needed.
I feel it is very natural to touch and allow this healing energy to flow when someone is in pain, and to assist in relieving this pain. I liken it to the healing feelings I may have when comforting a child or loved one.
A treatment can last an hour or longer depending on the treatment required. Some people have spoken of feeling warm or cool breezes flowing over them, a floating sensation, tingling, a sense of movement deep within and a release of tension, anxiety, fear or other negative feelings. Others drift off to sleep or report floating outside their bodies or have visions and other mystical experiences.
While the experience is different for every client, most people leave feeling deeply relaxed, in a state of peace. At the end of the treatment, you will feel refreshed with a more positive, balanced outlook.
Reiki Energy Healing: History
Dr. Mikao Usui originated the system of Reiki Energy Healing in 1922, after experiencing a mystical revelation during a Buddhist training course on Mount Kurama. A few months after his discovery, Dr. Usui started a Reiki organization called the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai whose purpose was to practice and teach Reiki. His Reiki organization was quickly grew and devotees of the practice developed it further, and then introduced it to the western world. There is no religious or belief system attached to Reiki Energy Healing, so anyone can receive a Reiki Energy Healing treatment or attunement.
Reiki Energy Healing: FAQs
The most authentic understanding I have found is that Dr. Mikao Usui originated the system of healing he taught and practiced based first on his mystical experience on Mt. Kurama in March of 1922 and then later by making use of his studies in many different areas of knowledge. Usui Reiki has no connection to Buddhism, nor is it connected to Tibetan Buddhism or Tibetan shamanism or any other religion. One story says Dr. Usui discovered the Reiki symbols in a Tibetan sutra, but even though people have carefully looked, no one has been able to find a Tibetan sutra with Reiki symbols in it. This is further validated by Dr. Usui’s own writing in which he says, "Our Reiki Ryoho is something absolutely original and cannot be compared with any other (spiritual) path in the world." (Taken from his Reiki Ryoho Handbook) A few months after his discovery, Dr. Usui started a Reiki organization called the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai whose purpose was to practice and teach Reiki. He asked Sensei Hyashi to further develop the teachings along with Mrs. Takata who further developed the teachings and then brought Reiki to the western world. A more detailed explanation can be found in his book, Reiki, The Healing Touch. Because there is no belief system attached to Reiki, anyone can receive a Reiki treatment or a Reiki attunement. As in any healing the first step towards a healthier life is a desire to be healed.
Reiki can be used for many ailments like reducing stress, relieving pain, headaches, stomach upsets, back problems, asthma - respiratory problems, PMT, menstrual problems, sinus, anxiety and many more. Reiki is an alternative complimentary therapy and should never be used in place of medical treatment.
